Memory of Water at The Company of Players (Hertford) 14
Season: 2001-2002
13th – 20th April 2002 at 8pm Memory of Water
By Shelagh Stephenson
Directed by  Cathie Mulroney

The play is a touching, but very funny comedy about three sisters and their reaction to their monther’s death.

Meeting up for the funeral, they struggle over who remembers which events more clearly, only to find that their individual memories become fuzzy.

Bereavement is a tricky subject, inspiring a range of emotions which can veer from misery to amusement very quickly. Stephenson grapples with this kind of roller-coaster ride, veering from the darkly dramatic to the wryly humourous, with great skill

Winner of a 2000 Laurence Olivier Award this is a bittersweet comedy from one of Britain’s hottest new playwrights.

“Blessedly and mercurially funny…Stephenson, a mistress of comic anguish, is clearly a real find” – The Guardian

Since her directorial debut for CoPs with The Birthday Party in 1989, Cathie Mulroney has directed a number of productions, including Steel Magnolias, All My Sons and most recently The Steward Of Christendom.

Shelagh Stephenson has written five original plays for BBC Radio. Her first stage play, The Memory Of Water, opened at The Hampstead Theatre, London, in July 1996, and her second, An Experiment With An Air Pump, in 1998.
