Synopsis:

George Orwell’s 1984 is one of the most well-known and influential stories ever written, and remains strikingly relevant today. Set in a dystopian society ruled by the Party and its figurehead, Big Brother, the story follows Winston Smith, a man living under constant surveillance, where history is rewritten, language is controlled, and truth is dictated. When Winston begins to question the world around him, forming a forbidden relationship with Julia and seeking something more, he is drawn into a dangerous game with devastating consequences.

This adaptation, written by Nick Hern, picks up some time after Winston has been captured by the Thought Police, in prison, found guilty of thoughtcrimes against Big Brother. As part of his reconstruction, he must re-enact key moments from his past life, under the watchful eye of O’Brien, with the help of other thought criminals, so that everyone can learn from his mistakes… including his biggest mistake of all: falling in love with Julia.

This production will be staged fully in the round, with the audience surrounding the action on all sides. The show is very much an ensemble piece, and while some parts may be larger than others on the page, every character has a vital role to play, no matter how big or small.
