Sleuth at The Company of Players (Hertford) 01
Season: 2005-2006
20th – 28th January 2006 at 8pm Sleuth
By Anthony Shaffer
Directed by  Barry Lee

Sleuth is both a classic thriller and a parody of the genre; it has so many twists and turns it is difficult to summarise the plot without spoiling it! Suffice to say, one of the protagonists, Andrew Wyke, is actually a thriller writer himself and he plans to inflict revenge on his wife’s lover, Milo Tindle.

The play explores the jealousy between an older and a younger man, and the suspense keeps you guessing right up to the final curtain. This intriguing whodunit (or rather who-done-what!) has thrilled and delighted audiences the world over since it was first presented in 1970.

Sleuth was a triumph on Broadway as well as in London, and in 1972 was turned into a successful film, from Shaffer’s own screenplay. A former barrister, Shaffer also wrote some other notable screenplays, including The Wicker Man, Death On The Nile and Evil Under The Sun. He is the twin brother of equally celebrated playright, Peter Shaffer.

Barry Lee is one of CoPs most experienced directors, having directed more plays for The Company than anyone else. His last plays were Peggy For You (2003) and The Mysterious Mr.Love (2004).
