A gripping and unsettling parable, Foxfinder is darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar.
The English countryside is on the brink of crisis and subject to rigorous official inspection. William Bloor, a 'foxfinder', arrives at Sam and Judith Covey's farm to investigate a suspected contamination. The Coveys, who are already troubled by the death of their son and their failing crops, find themselves under investigation by Bloor, for whom the fox is the deadly enemy of mankind, with the power to contaminate farms, influence the weather, unsettle the mind and kill children.
Bloor is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man's civilisation, and yet remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives for ever; Bloor's fox fixation leads neighbours to betray each other, drives the innocent Samuel into a state of deluded guilt.
