Making History is a rare historical drama by the renowned playwright Brian Friel, who also wrote Dancing at Lughnasa and Philadelphia Here I Come.

Set in seventeenth century Ireland and Rome, the action follows the fortunes - political and personal - of the legendary Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone. O'Neill is torn between loyalty to Queen Elizabeth, who has made him an earl, and loyalty to the Irish people.

The text, couched in Friel's lyrical phrases, is rich in humour and pathos.

Making History is not a complex historical play but concentrates on the domestic, behind-the-scenes issues which led to rebellion.
